Rider Profile: Lucy

Did you know that only 30% of Divvy members are female identifying? This month we’re talking to our members to learn how they started riding and their protips for getting started. Together we can #ClosetheFenderGap in biking.

Meet Lucy, a photographer who got her start in commuting by bike when she moved from Missouri to Chicago.

How did you get started with biking in the city?

Lucy: I came from an area where the biking scene was all guys and people could be snobs around riding which held me back until college. I went to school in Missouri and started riding trails out there. Then when I moved to Chicago I wanted a way to get to know the city and I ended up buying this 1975 pink bike on Craigslist and 10 years later I'm still riding it.

What is your favorite part of riding?

Lucy: It’s fun! Once I got started, I realized that this is one of the greatest pleasures of life and how did I go so long without riding? Plus it’s super social. I can just hop on my bike and meet friends.

What is your advice for people just getting started?

Lucy: Just start riding somewhere. Any new habit is hard but you just have to start. And pro tip: map your route to follow bike lanes or go on side streets to stay safe while riding.
